“Cloudflare loses 22% of its domains in Freenom .tk shutdown”

Published on in 🔗 Links

Reading about Freenom and .tk domains brings back memories: The first domains I registered were free .tk domains because I was too cheap to pay for domains as a high school student and also had no credit card to do so.

What should I do with my new domain?

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

I recently complained about domain registrars. But I also recently registered a new domain: j7s.me. A numeronym of my first name. And the .me TLD to show that I am a person. (And it is a short domain that was available.)

Trying Spaceship.com

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Some time ago, I somewhere read about Spaceship.com, a new player in the domain registration business, and registered an account to try it out. Some things kept me from transferring any domains to it (don’t really remember anymore, though), but it was also still in the beta phase back then.

Yes, I still keep some old domains to redirect to sections of this blog: appydroid.eu to redirect to the app and smartphone related section and ein-geek.de to redirect to the German part of my blog. Even though I merged them about four years ago. 😄

By the way, the oldest post still live on this site is approaching its seventh birthday. Time flies! 😱

Migrating away from Cloudflare

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Recently I stumbled across two threads regarding Cloudflare that somehow left a bitter taste. I think it’s a big red flag when users have to seek support via public forums because their accounts have been banned from a service, but no help comes via support.

Domain registrar Gandi announced price increases for .com domains starting in September. This is due to Verisign raising the prices registrars have to pay them for each domain.

I am all for using a custom domain for email addresses. I mostly use @jlelse.de, but I can also be reached via email addresses with @janlukas.de, @jlelse.blog and a number of other domains. Recently I bought yet another domain, but now I’m questioning if that was really a good idea. Well, maybe I will still find a practical use for this domain.

Example domains

Published on in 💭 Thoughts

Did you know that there are official example domains that can be used in documentation? example.com, example.net and example.org are all example domains of the IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which are explicitly intended for use in documentation.1 In documentations or even in sample code I often stumbled over examples where no official sample domain was used, but one that can actually be registered. It is not recommended to use such a domain, because you can’t make sure that it will be registered once and maybe unintentionally data will end up with strangers.
